Solar water heaters use direct sunlight to heat and store hot water. They are a way to reduce electrical or gas use. However, solar energy is effectively available only from 2-4 hours per day on a sunny day. At night, or when the weather is rainy or cloudy, solar water heaters have backup electric heating elements to provide hot water.
